Seeking Serenity in Life

There are as many ways to live and grow as there are people. Our own ways are the only ways that should matter to us“. ~ Evelyn Mandel

Wanting to control other people, to make them live as we’d have them live, makes the attainment of serenity impossible. And serenity is the goal we are seeking in this life, at least I am. But, sometimes life throws us curveballs; divorce, aging parents, debilitating illness, death, addiction, etc. Maintaining serenity at these times just might be what saves your life (or your ass, whatever you’re most anxious about keeping!)

What’s the difference between peace and serenity?

Serenity is defined as the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled. Peace is defined as freedom from disturbance, tranquility. Being serene when chaos and adversity are happening is enjoyable and peaceful.

What does it mean to find serenity?

Seeking serenity is a way to both detach from turmoil and, engage in positive thoughts and activities. Serenity might be defined as the simple experience of calmness, peacefulness, or tranquility. But, for many, it is a feeling that comes from a place deep within.

How do I seek serenity?

Seven Daily Habits to Practice in Seeking Serenity

  1. Create a calming morning ritual (getting up early is essential)
  2. Pay attention to how you respond to stress
  3. Create healthier responses to stress
  4. It’s not personal
  5. Find reasons for gratitude
  6. Do one thing at a time, BE in each passing moment
  7. Minimize the noise in your life

Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment.” ~ Grenville Kleiser

In seeking serenity in life, one should take the time to reflect on their choices, looking to see if they are, in fact, following the correct path for themselves. For example, suppose there are constraints laid down by a partner, society, or traditions suppressing them. In that case, it is crucial for the individual to realize that there may be more options open than initially thought.

As human beings, we should not feel that we have no choice but to continue down a particular life path. If stuck in a rut of stress and unhappiness, it is essential to realize that we have the ability to change our lives around. If you feel as though you are being held back from achieving dreams, changed behaviors, or goals because of society or customs, then it is vital to find the courage to break free and be responsible to yourself.

Do not feel disheartened if others advise you against breaking from tradition, for they may be afraid of changing themselves. Instead, try not to allow the opinions of others to destroy dreams and hopes. To find serenity in life, one must have the courage and strength to stand up for their desires. A person should never feel suppressed by anyone or any particular “idea” because we are only in control of our own lives at the end of the day. This ultimately means others are not in control of our life either!

Be careful to not run head-first into decisions that may be regretted later on. However, looking forward to tomorrow with an open mind and courage will help one’s dreams become a reality. The most important thing to do to find serenity in life is to realize that you hold the future in your own hands.

Serenity Amidst Chaos

Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no trouble, no noise, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of all these things and still be calm in your heart.” ~ Unknown

To find serenity amidst the chaos, we need first to understand the idea of self-determination.

Self-determination means a state in which one is the master of their destiny, which can be achieved in many ways. One way is to have a deep understanding of our own capabilities. This may sound simple enough, but if we really stop and think about what we could accomplish in our lives, we realize that it is much more than what we attempt to achieve.

Another method would be to understand other people’s purpose and place in life. Once we see other people for who they are and what they can bring to the table, we can make better choices and decisions about how we deal with them and come to a much greater understanding of life in general.

Lastly, we must understand the world around us and its correlation with our existence. Knowing the past, present, and future of the universe in its entirety will allow us to see what steps need to be taken to reach completeness as individuals and as a society.

Doing all this, however, is easier said than done. Try the following as well:

  • Breath
  • Rock out
  • Uni-Task (one thing at a time)
  • Step Away
  • Reset. Rethink.
  • Fresh air break
  • Read
  • Reconnect/meditate
  • Stretch
  • Laugh

The concept of self-determination comes with its own set of obstacles that only worsen the more we attempt to climb them. The road to understanding ourselves can be long and filled with hardship while attempting to understand others may lead us down an even darker path than before. Trying to understand the world can be a challenge in its own right. But guess what? We don’t have to! We need only seek to understand ourselves and how we relate to the world around us. No matter how difficult things may be at the time, it still cannot change the fact that life itself is a journey, might as well try to be serene through it all!

Many in this world would like us to believe in our insignificance in the grand scheme of things, that we are but tiny specks in the grand scheme of all things wonderful and beautiful that is this world. Some would like us to believe that there is no hope for our future; society has reached its peak and will only be downhill from here. There are still others who feel they can force their ideologies onto the rest of us, even if it means we destroy our very own lives.

No matter how dark and discouraging things may appear, there is always an end and a beginning to it all. Things will change. We change. It’s how resistant we are to the change that determines our level of serenity.

There is a hidden message in everything around us, and it is up to us to take the time to look for it. The message may not be what we were originally looking for, but that doesn’t mean it will be any less significant or important. On the contrary, it just might be even better than what you initially thought!
